The Wildlife Refuge Rio Escalante-Chacocente is the largest reserve of dry tropical forest in the country with over 4,600 hectares spanning 48 sq. kms. and is habitat for many species of fauna and abundant wildlife.  It is one of the 78 national reserves which are officially under protection in the country as it is a migration and nesting site for sea turtles.  The reserve consists of raw untouched virgin land, 12 kms of beautiful beaches, rolling hills, and fertile inland valleys.  The wildlife refuge is situated in the departments of Rivas and Carazo at the Pacific coast.  The reserve lies just north of the famous Tola surf zone, one of the most popular surf areas in Nicaragua.  It is accessible from both the north and south sides of Casares and Astillero respectively.
